Wife Carrying Champion

SPORTING NEWS: John Farra, a former Olympic skier, won the North American Wife Carrying Championship at Sunday River, Maine last month. His first-place finish earned him and his 110-pound wife Tess her weight in beer and five times her weight in cash, or $550. Sedona considered such an event, but found no man who could lift his wife, never mind carry her.

MORE SPORTING NEWS: A 62-year-old retired accountant from Nevada swallowed 247 peppers in eight minutes to win the Jalapeno Eating World Championship at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas. Richard LeFevre won $2,000 for prevailing in the contest, which was sponsored by the International Federation of Competitive Eating. A toilet paper company is expected to cosponsor next year’s competition.

POT NEWS: A Pima, AZ couple has stepped down as leaders of a church that considers marijuana a sacrament and deity. In February, the two were arrested in a car that contained 172 pounds of marijuana in Lordsburg, NM near the Arizona state line and are now facing 40 years in prison if convicted. Being imprisoned could adversely affect their ability to lead their congregation and they felt it better if the church disbanded.

BABY NEWS: Leann Real promised her husband, an avid sports fan, that if they ever had a son he’d get to pick the name. ESPN Montana Real was born at Biloxi Regional Medical Center. Three others were cited in a report on tivocommunity.com. They are Espn Malachi McCall in Pampa, Texas; Espn Curiel in Corpus Christi, Texas; and Espn Blondeel in Michigan. So far, no babies named ESPN2.
